This is not an accurate portrayal of the traffic situation in Shanghai.
For one, its too bare. Normally, there will be MANY things on the road.
For example, you have men dragging wheelbarrows of firewood (yes, in this age of electricity), women in flowery pleated ankle-long skirts on bicycles or scooters , construction workers with shovels on their shoulders walking haphazardly, many taxis and just as many pedastrians!
Secondly, it looks orderly. Thats not right. Cos in shanghai, there are NO rules. Free for all i call it.
You have a road, you have cars at one end and cars at the other, and the cars here wanna go there while the cars there wanna come here. Not forgetting motorcycles, scooters and bicycles. To top it off, you have people, hundreds of them wanting to cross the road in all possible angles and directions. So everybody just goes ahead. Lane markings , traffic lights and zebra crossings are merely for ornamental purposes or the road is boring black.
Like how my friend asked a senior :
" Where's the stop line ? "
My senior :" There isn't one. "
Friend : " So where do they stop ? "
Senior : " Ping2 Gan3 Jue2. "
How to not get knocked down while crossing the road?
Close your eyes and cross. Stop for 2 seconds when you hear a loud-enough horn. Then continue in original direction. You'll live. :)

had crystal jade with mummy. Don't worry , its cheaper but singapore has the exact same menu and better quality for most dishes except well.. the xiao long bao :)

some hostel pictures. Self-explanatory. (mum helping out w cleaning. love u mum!)

Yes yes, horror of horrors. i'm with Ah Boon. haha. He's my hostel mate. We should survive without hating each other (too much). no la, we're pretty much on the same cheenabiang freq and generally harmless ppl. but living with some1 else takes so much EQ and compromise sometimes. i am still waiting for a transfer quietly.
This is us after a major cleanup (w sweeping , mopping) : we're both hygiene freaks. haha. him more than me i suspect but i'm putting up a good pretence to keep him on his toes. heh.

how's the weather?
its singapore but dryer, cooler but sometimes it just drips the entire day. yes 'drip'.

how's the price?
everything is cheaper except for imported clothing and accessories i suspect. food is well dirt cheap , a not-so-decent cafe (flies but airconditioned) : two bowls of pretty Q and tasty noodles and one small bowl of 8 less-than-yummy wantons = SGD 2.40. Hmm.
Magnum icecream is erm SGD 70cents
Samsung LCD screen + China brand webcam, keyboard , mouse and 50 CD-Rs for SGD 400.

how's the people?
hmm. service industry is virtually non-existent. the people are frank but generally harmless i guess. its just a culture where people believe in expressing what they think on their faces and sometimes magnifying it through their actions and speech volume. Some of them are okay really. Just get used to shoving , non-queues and in-OUR-local-culture , what is regarded as low-class. I think most of us Singaporeans are too sheltered : we are a small country after all and i guess we can't blame ourselves for being narrowminded. I'm not exactly pro-china yet but i guess a global outlook which accepts different cultures (and i'm not talking about just the pro-American (Jap and Korean) or American culture which our country deems as the ideal) is more than necessary as cross-boundary communication becomes more accessible. Yea, thats my view on this matter. I get peeved too but i don't get upset with anyone or anything. They have a long way to go but don't we too? :)

oh well. this will be the last blog for some time guys so its pretty long, do your own re-reading if u miss me / my writing . heh.

take care all.

lastly, some trivia,

from the left :
my access card to my dorm , my top-up card for internet access , my top-up handphone card , my Bank of China ATM card and 100 RMB (the largest value that China notes have - very inconvenient. heh. )
